Preparation for Capsule Endoscopy
Before your capsule endoscopy, a member of your healthcare team will give you specific instructions to follow. It is important to follow these carefully, as not preparing correctly may mean the procedure has to be rescheduled.
You will usually be asked to stop eating and drinking at least 12 hours before the test to ensure the camera can capture clear images of the digestive tract. In some cases, you may also be given a laxative to help clear the small intestine and improve image quality. You may also be advised to stop certain medications before the procedure.
After swallowing the capsule, most people can continue with normal daily activities. However, you may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting. If your job is physically demanding, you should check with your healthcare team about whether it is safe to return to work on the same day.
What to Expect During the procedure
On the day of your capsule endoscopy, your healthcare team will explain the procedure and prepare you for the test. You may be asked to remove your shirt so that adhesive patches can be placed on your abdomen. These patches are connected by wires to a small recorder worn on a belt around your waist. In some cases, a patch free system may be used instead.
Once the equipment is set up, you will swallow the capsule with water. It is coated to make it easier to swallow and is usually not felt once inside the body. After this, you can go about most of your normal day, including driving and, in some cases, working. You will be advised to avoid strenuous activity such as running or heavy exercise during the test.
