What is Capsule Endoscopy?

Capsule endoscopy is a procedure that uses a tiny wireless camera to take images of the digestive tract, the system that carries food and liquids through the body.

The camera is contained inside a vitamin sized capsule that is swallowed. As it travels naturally through the digestive system it captures thousands of images which are transmitted to a recorder worn on a belt around the waist.

This test is especially useful for viewing the small intestine, an area that is difficult to examine using traditional endoscopy. Standard endoscopy involves a long flexible tube with a camera passed through the throat or rectum which cannot easily reach the small bowel.

Why Capsule Endoscopy is Done

Capsule endoscopy is used to examine the small intestine, including the Duodenum, Jejunum and Ileum. It is most commonly used to find the cause of bleeding in the small bowel.

It can also help diagnose conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis by identifying areas of inflammation, as well as coeliac disease. In some cases it is used to detect tumours or other abnormalities in the digestive tract.

The test may also be used to examine the oesophagus for enlarged veins called varices, or to screen for polyps in people with inherited conditions. It is sometimes recommended when other imaging tests are unclear and more detail is needed.

Effective

Allows doctors to examine up to 4 metres of the small bowel, an area that is hard to assess using standard endoscopy methods such as gastroscopy or colonoscopy.

Painless

Swallow the capsule with some water, just like taking a regular tablet. Once swallowed you can get on with your day as normal.

Comprehensive Reports

Prepared by experienced gut health clinicians, giving you clear next steps for relief and long-term wellbeing.

Fully Regulated

Performed in a highly-regulated hospital environment.

Preparation for Capsule Endoscopy

Before your capsule endoscopy, a member of your healthcare team will give you specific instructions to follow. It is important to follow these carefully, as not preparing correctly may mean the procedure has to be rescheduled.

You will usually be asked to stop eating and drinking at least 12 hours before the test to ensure the camera can capture clear images of the digestive tract. In some cases, you may also be given a laxative to help clear the small intestine and improve image quality. You may also be advised to stop certain medications before the procedure.

After swallowing the capsule, most people can continue with normal daily activities. However, you may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting. If your job is physically demanding, you should check with your healthcare team about whether it is safe to return to work on the same day.

What to Expect During the procedure

On the day of your capsule endoscopy, your healthcare team will explain the procedure and prepare you for the test. You may be asked to remove your shirt so that adhesive patches can be placed on your abdomen. These patches are connected by wires to a small recorder worn on a belt around your waist. In some cases, a patch free system may be used instead.

Once the equipment is set up, you will swallow the capsule with water. It is coated to make it easier to swallow and is usually not felt once inside the body. After this, you can go about most of your normal day, including driving and, in some cases, working. You will be advised to avoid strenuous activity such as running or heavy exercise during the test.

Capsule Endoscopy Aftercare & Results

After swallowing the capsule, you will usually be advised to wait around two hours before drinking clear fluids, and after four hours you may be able to eat a light meal unless instructed otherwise. The test is typically complete after around eight hours, or once the capsule has passed naturally in your stool. At this point, you remove the recorder and patches, return the equipment as instructed, and the capsule can be safely flushed away.

The capsule is usually passed within hours or days, although this can vary between individuals. If it has not passed within two weeks, you may be advised to contact your healthcare team for further assessment. The images captured during the procedure are compiled into a video for review by a specialist, which may take several days to a week or longer to process. Once reviewed, your results will be shared with you by your healthcare provider.

Our Testing Process

Getting a capsule endoscopy is simple and straightforward. After your referral and booking, you’ll swallow a small, pill-sized camera at our clinic, and our specialists will analyse the images it captures. Within 1–2 weeks, you’ll receive a detailed report with personalised recommendations and next steps.

Book your appointment

If you’ve been referred by your GP or another healthcare professional, you can book directly with us. If you don’t yet have a referral, our team can advise you on how to arrange one.

Attend your capsule endoscopy

On the day of your test, you’ll swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. It contains a miniature camera, light, and transmitter. As it passes naturally through your digestive system, it will take thousands of images of your small bowel, sending them wirelessly to a data recorder you’ll wear around your waist. The test is painless, requires no sedation, and you can usually get on with your day as normal.

Receive your results and personalised report

Within 1–2 weeks, a consultant will carefully review your images and provide a detailed report. You’ll then have a follow-up consultation to discuss the findings, treatment options, or onward referrals if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the product and billing.
What is a capsule endoscopy?
A capsule endoscopy is a test that uses a small, pill-sized camera to take thousands of pictures of your small bowel (small intestine) as it passes naturally through your digestive system.
Is the procedure painful?
No — the test is completely painless. You simply swallow the capsule with some water, and it travels through your gut without you feeling it. Most people carry on with their day as normal.
Do I need sedation or anaesthetic?
No sedation or anaesthetic is required. The test is non-invasive and does not require recovery time.
How long does the test take?
The capsule usually takes 8–12 hours to pass through your digestive system. During this time, you’ll wear a recorder around your waist to capture the images.
How do I prepare for the test?
You’ll usually be asked to fast for several hours before swallowing the capsule. Your doctor may also advise avoiding certain foods or medications in the lead-up to the procedure.
What happens to the capsule afterwards?
The capsule is disposable. It passes naturally in your stool, usually within 24–48 hours, and does not need to be retrieved.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Capsule endoscopy is very safe. Rarely, the capsule can become stuck if there is a narrowing in the bowel, but your doctor will check your medical history to minimise this risk.
How do I get my results?
After the test, the images are reviewed by a specialist. You’ll receive a detailed report, and your doctor will discuss the findings and any next steps with you.
