Mr Tariq Ismail graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff. He obtained his FRCS in 1986 and went onto be awarded an MD with Distinction, before undertaking a sabbatical at the National Cancer Institute of Tokyo. He returned to the UK to undertake a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon post at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
During his career, his research team has received a number of awards, including the Arderne Gold and Syme Professorship. He was a vital component to the introduction of CT colonography, Video Capsule Endoscopy (Pill Cam) and Laparoscopic and robotic Colorectal surgery in Birmingham. He was also a key part of setting up the Birmingham Bowel Clinic, the first private centre of excellence to manage bowel conditions in the West Midlands. Here the clinic offers investigation for a range of symptoms, such as rectal bleeding, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, anal pain, anaemia, faecal incontinence and irritable bowel syndrome. A number of procedures are offered at the clinic, including Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, operations for colon cancer, rectal cancer, anal fistula, anal fissure, anal cancer, rectal prolapse, Crohn's disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Diverticular disease.
The clinic also offers most general surgical procedures, including hernia, pilonidal sinus and piles treatments. Mr Ismail performs the HALO procedure, which is a virtually pain-free treatment for piles. He is listed as a Surgeon on The British Haemorrhoid Centre website and has been featured on TV on BBC2's TV Don't Die Young and on C4's Embarrassing Bodies. His work has been published widely on translational research in Proteomics, gene therapy and biomarkers for Colorectal Cancer.
