Mr Tariq Ismail

Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon
Mr Tariq Ismail is a leading Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in Birmingham.Mr Ismail graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff, obtained his FRCS in 1986, and was awarded an MD with Distinction. His registrar training was in the West Midlands, Hong Kong, and at the National Cancer Institute in Tokyo before being appointed Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 1995.

His clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of bowel cancer. Over 25 years in consultant practice, he has led a high-volume, high-quality colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team with excellent patient outcomes. He also undertakes complex surgery with a regional and supra-regional referral practice for bowel cancer, anal cancer, and anorectal melanoma.

He was one of the first to introduce laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery for benign and malignant colorectal disease in the West Midlands. Mr Ismail has been a surgical tutor and senior examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and has held numerous management roles, including surgery and endoscopy lead for the Trust. He was pivotal in setting up and leading the colorectal cancer MDT and Enhanced Recovery Surgical Pathways.

He has published widely on translational research in colorectal cancer, including biomarkers, proteomics, gene therapy, and genomics, and has mentored numerous surgical trainees and research fellows.

Mr Ismail was also instrumental in setting up the Birmingham Bowel Clinic, the first private centre of excellence managing bowel conditions in the West Midlands. The clinic provides a comprehensive and integrated multidisciplinary service for the management of bowel conditions.

He also performs the HALO procedure, a virtually pain free treatment for piles, which has been featured on Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies and BBC Two’s Don’t Die Young.

The clinic offers treatment for all major and minor bowel symptoms including rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habit, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, abdominal mass, anal pain, anal itch (pruritus), piles (haemorrhoids), anaemia, and anal incontinence.

Mr Ismail is an expert JAG accredited trainer endoscopist. He provides flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, and colonoscopy with polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).

His clinical interests include colorectal surgery, colorectal cancer, anal cancer, anorectal melanoma, diverticular disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, coloproctology, haemorrhoids, fistula, fissures, anal skin tags, pilonidal sinus, rectal prolapse, and general surgery including hernia repair, inguinal hernia repair, umbilical hernia repair, incisional hernia repair, parastomal hernia repair, and benign skin lesions.
